Genre
Pop Art
Based in
New York City, USA
Tom Wesselmann (b. 1931) is considered, alongside Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, a key figure of New York Pop Art. Rejecting Abstract Expressionism, he developed a bold visual language through painting and innovative sculpture.
Women were a central theme: his iconic Great American Nude series (1961–1973) features flat, faceless figures shaped by the imagery of American advertising.
Educated at Cooper Union and the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Wesselmann began as a cartoonist before gaining international recognition. His works are held in major collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.
